The history of the pisciculture science in Belarus starts in 1928 with the foundation of Belarusian Scientific and Research Station of Fish Industry. As a result of the further re-organizations on the 10th of February, 1958 the Belarusian Scientific and Research Fish Industry Institute was formed. At present it is called «Belarus National Academy of Sciences Fish Industry Institute».

«Belarus National Academy of Sciences Fish Industry Institute» RUE, includes six scientific and research laboratories: laboratory of pond pisciculture, laboratory of breeding and genetics, laboratory of fish diseases, laboratory of fish fodders, laboratory of radio-ecology and environmental quality, laboratory of pisciculture and fishing in the natural lakes. Experimental base of the Institute is represented by selection and breeding department «Isobelino», self-supporting department «Vileika» and experimental lake base «Cheresovo».

Main subjects of scientific research

Forty-five scientific workers carry out the scientific and research work, among them are:
1 doctor of sciences, 15 candidates of sciences. The school of highest qualification personnel in pisciculture has been formed. The training of the highest qualification experts is done through the intentional study at the post-graduate courses of other institutes.

The priority topics of Institute research are following:

• improvement and creation of new high-productive breeds, lines an crosses of common carp for the purposes of commercial fish-farming;


• development of new intensive, integrated, resource-saving and pollution-free technologies of the traditional and perspective objects of fish-farming in the artificial and natural reservoirs (such as paddlefish, buffalo, sterlet, catfish, pike perch etc.);


• development of reproduction technologies for the valued aboriginal fish species with a purpose of natural ponds seeding;


• development of new formula of the mixed fodder with better assimilability and lower price, as well as start fodder for the fry of predatory fish (such as pike, eel, catfish);


• development of new methods and drugs for prophylaxis and treatment of fish diseases, research broadening in the field of toxicology and mycology;


• development of principles and methods of the efficient fishery in natural reservoirs;
